Like Cabernet Sauvignon, it is recognized as a late harvested grape variety: late bud burst then late ripeness of the berries.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>A rare grape variety with a good aging capacity<\/h3>\n<p>Throughout the wine-growing regions of the world, we note that this grape is rarely sold as a single grape variety, it is mostly found in blends with its two favorite companions: Syrah and Grenache Noir. It is sublimated in red of course, but also in ros\u00e9. It is indeed within this appellation that ros\u00e9 has first been recognized as a great wine, thanks in particular to Mourv\u00e8dre &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The wines from this terroir are racy, powerful and made to improve over time after a few years in bottle.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2002, there has been a Conservatory of Mourv\u00e8dre in the AOP Bandol, located in the town of Saint-Cyr. This place was created in order to preserve the diversity of this grape variety and to set up a genetic reservoir.<\/p>\n<p><u>Cuv\u00e9e to try<\/u>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gros-nore.com\/fr\/bandol-rouge-gros-nore.htm\">Domaine du Gros Nor\u00e9 AOP BANDOL ROUGE 2016<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In South Australia, in the <strong>Barossa Valley<\/strong> region, Mourv\u00e8dre or rather Mataro (its Spanish name) is also recognized for being the source of exceptional wines.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to its hot climate and its geographical position in the southern hemisphere, it is picked up at the end of the harvest: between late February and early March. A 6-month lag with the French harvest!<\/p>\n<p>It offers racy, spicy wines with beautiful tannin, with a leather side specific to the great Mourv\u00e8dre made with a sense of place.<\/p>\n<p><u>Cuv\u00e9e to try:<\/u> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnduvalwines.com\/product\/2018-annexus-mataro\/\">John Duval, Annexus Mataro 2016<\/a> (from a century old Mourv\u00e8dre vine)<\/p>\n<h3>Po\u00e8tes, our Single Parcel Wine of Mourv\u00e8dre<\/h3>\n<p>At Ch\u00e2teau Haut-Blanville, we vinify, among our parcel\u2019s selections, the parcel named &#8220;Po\u00e8tes&#8221; which is one of our historic single parcel wines within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gres-de-montpellier.com\">Gr\u00e9s de Montpellier.<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>appellation. This plot of Mourv\u00e8dre is located at the top of the slope of our \u201cPeyrals\u201d terroir, in the town of Saint-Pargoire, where the stoniness is the most important.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blanville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_1887-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8199 size-medium\" title=\"Parcelle de Mourv\u00e8dre de Ch\u00e2teau Haut-Blanville\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blanville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_1887-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"Vignes de Mourv\u00e8dre\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blanville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_1887-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.blanville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_1887-960x640.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.blanville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_1887-240x160.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.blanville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_1887-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.blanville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_1887-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.blanville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/img_1887-655x437.jpg 655w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Its unique profile reminds me after a few years in bottle of the character of a great Barolo while in its youth it offers the typical characteristics of our terroirs: tannic power, salinity, black fruits and garrigue coated with a nice touch of sweetness brought by its delicate aging in French oak barrels.<\/p>\n<p>This year again it will be harvested the latest, at the end of September, the announcement of a very beautiful vintage for this Mourv\u00e8dre thanks to significant thermal amplitudes and rainfall in September which will have allowed this beautiful plot to reach full maturity.<\/p>\n<p>After a long maceration tailored for a great ageable wine, this cuv\u00e9e will be barreled during the spring 2021 for a period of 2 to 3 years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lovers of our Mourv\u00e8dre &#8220;Po\u00e8tes&#8221; can already drink its 2015 vintage, which has received one of the best reviews for Languedoc wines by the prestigious English wine critic Jancis Robinson:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ch\u00e2teau Haut-Blanville Po\u00e8tes 2015,\u00a017.5\/20 drink between 2020 and 2027:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cA single parcel of Mourv\u00e8dre grown on limestone soils on the slopes of St-Pargoire.\u00c9levage in used French oak barriques for 36 months.<br \/>\nGorgeously peppery on the nose and palate, with sensuously ripe damson fruit. A\u00a0touch of the classic Mourv\u00e8dre meatiness, but more along the profile of a peppery\u00a0bresaola rather than saucisson. There is enormous elegance in this wine, a stillness,\u00a0a precision and fineness of structure that belies its 14.5% alcohol. A beautiful wine\u00a0which doesn&#8217;t shout or dominate but must not be overlooked.
